Increasing the tutor workforce was identified as a priority development area within the Empowering Our People Strategy as the delivery of more courses across the UK will result in more PE teachers and community sports coaches being upskilled (to deliver high quality introductory goalball sessions and tournaments) and therefore more children and young people having the opportunity to participate in the sport.
Founded in 2013 by Paralympian Stephen Miller MBE and his wife Rachel, Smile Through Sport offers grassroots sport and physical activity opportunities across the North East of England. The charity works with people of all ages and provides activities, events, and competitions for people with disabilities.
As for Rob and Jan, they are both goalball enthusiasts who have an extensive background in inclusive education and employment. They are both Boccia England tutors and have experience of delivering courses for the Activity Alliance. In addition, Rob (who is based in South West England) has worked for the Youth Sport Trust (YST) and Jan (who is based in South East England) has worked for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) – so a real wealth of knowledge and experience.
All the new tutors have undergone a period of training, familiarisation and observation and are now ready to deliver. If your organisation would like to become a delivery partner, or if you would like to request a Goalball School Leaders Course for your staff, please get in touch with us – enquiries@goalballuk.com.
